Langoliers
Stephen King's Langoliers
I saw this movie on TV in the early-mid 90s, and I consider it my absolute scariest movie.
It's not gory, or visually dark, there's no jump scares, it's just absolutely creepy.
The characters are on an airplane, which passes through a portal to "yesterday." The people that were asleep survive, while those that were awake disappear. Eventually they land at a completely empty airport. Even the air feels empty. And they convey that!
There's a disabled blind girl, and a creepy dude that plays with matches that don't light, and other characters that make for great interactions.
Ultimately, these giant three-mouthed ball creatures start eating the past, and so they have to escape before the world is eaten. And of course one of the pilots has to sacrifice himself because they can only pass through the portal while asleep, and someone has to be awake to aim the plane into the portal right.
The cinematography and sound design really make it a standout horror film, that still gives me nightmares.
